This is an interesting question, Josue! I’d say to really hook your reader, you might consider starting your essay right in the middle of all that confusion — Not necessarily where the confusion starts, but maybe a point in time during the confusion. This is a narrative technique called “in medias res,” which means “the middle of a narrative; without preamble.” It would be interesting to start right after the miscommunication happens, but without telling the reader what the miscommunication is until later. Alternatively, you could start by describing the consequences of the miscommunication, which could also get the reader hooked. I hope you found these suggestions useful! 🙂

like right after the miscommunication happened or right at the beginning of the conse

It begins with a miscommuniction/ confusion and ends with a greater appreciation of something. Any ideas?

Hi Yashveer!

Since the prompt asks you to imagine a story, you can basically start it however you like! I would start by brainstorming ideas about who the head of the organization is, what the organization does, the decision the head of the organization made, and why that decision was the wrong one to make. You might also consider looking up real-life cases of leaders making poor decisions as inspiration. Do you have any ideas as to how you might approach the characters, setting, and conflict of your essay?

Hi Lexi!

There are lots of great ways to start this essay, but because it’s a narrative essay you have a little more room for description, so I would suggest starting with a description. Spend some time setting the scene and describing your subject. You can do this in a lot of different ways — you can present a “perspective” of them by describing their lives and background, you can describe the setting and how they look or what they are like before the interview, or you could describe your relationship with them and why you chose them to interview. All of these help set the stage for the interview and put the reader closer to your subject and can be really effective for essays like this!

Best,
Amanda

Hi Yashveer! You’ve got a lot of interesting options here. First, you say “story” which suggests to me that you’re writing fiction, so you could potentially start with your assigned line. I think that’s a fine hook and it definitely whets my appetite for what else you might have to say :). Another option is to begin with a description, like so: “My palms were sweaty, my heart was racing, and I couldn’t keep still. Even though I knew I was guilty, I could not do anything.” Another option is to give the reader a sense of your crime, like so, “‘You were caught cheating!?!’ the letter my father had recieved from the school crumpled loudly in his hands as he waved them in the air, shouting. Even though I was guilty, I could not do anything.”
