Very insightful feedback, Ciara. I agree, going after your passion is of utmost importance. That’s why I chose a creative writing degree– statistics about employment opportunities be damned. I have never regretted that decision.

I think the question of whether college is worth it or not is a very relevant question for the Millennium generation and beyond. Before getting into the economics of the situation, I think the bigger point of importance is the first statistic that is mentioned. The book “Academically Adrift” by the researchers Richard Arum and Josipa Roksa summarizes and shows evidence for the current crisis of American Higher Education. It is worrisome that colleges do not hold a standard of excellence for their students and do not educate fully. It is understandable that in every college population there will be a percentage of students that do not improve, but 45% is very significant.
Beyond what you say about the economic factors invoked in making a decision about one’s major or field of study, I think that more important is one’s passion for the subject and how seriously a person takes his/her classes and interactions with the professor. Regardless of one’s major and how much earning potential it has, the more important question is how much one cares, how invested a student is in his/her subject. This makes all the difference. In following this passion and curiosity, one learns that education is about learning; about initially not knowing but having a million questions, and then discovering them along the way. It is the experience of higher education, or true learning, that will create adults for this world. This is what the economic system of America needs – people who are adults and know how to live in society. This is what education is for. And this is why college is worth it.
