In reply to Linda Abraham. Hi Linda, thanks for adding your expertise to this post! I like the idea of highlighting something that you are truly proud of about yourself in your personal statement. It seems the overall message we're getting from our experts is that a personal statement is about presenting your authentic self in a positive, polished, and interesting light.

The biggest mistake applicants make is writing what they think some (unknown) person wants to read instead of thinking about what they want their target programs to know about them. What are they really proud of that presents them well, and in cases when they are responding to a question, answers the question.

The best way to write a personal statement (and given my comments in the previous paragraph) is to start by thinking: What do I want to the school to know about me? What am I proud of? How would I like to introduce myself to the admissions committee?

Then allow plenty of time for writing and proofing.
