Hi Cara! I think the best hook here would be a powerful quote. Something by James himself would be ideal, or you could use something that really resonates with you and articulates your feelings about this without having to be too in-depth or intricate. I would suggest Googling “trust yourself quotes” or “self-confidence quotes” and see what comes up!

Hi Farhat! I’m glad you liked the post! The topic you’ve chosen is very timely and will definitely resonate with your audience :). I’m not sure whether you’re for or against the argument, which would obviously influence your hook, so I’ll help you with both. For either you could use 1) a supportive quote, 2) statistics that reinforce your position, or 3) a rhetorical story. A good example of a supportive quote is this one from former President Barak Obama in a recent statement, “What makes us American is not a question of what we look like, or where our names come from, or the way we pray. What makes us American is our fidelity to a set of ideals – that all of us are created equal; that all of us deserve the chance to make of our lives what we will; that all of us share an obligation to stand up, speak out, and secure our most cherished values for the next generation.” U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions offers a quote against allowing dreamers to remain in the following, “The executive branch, through DACA, deliberately sought to achieve what the legislative branch specifically refused to authorize on multiple occasions. Such an open-ended circumvention of immigration laws was an unconstitutional exercise of authority by the Executive Branch. The effect of this unilateral executive amnesty, among other things, contributed to a surge of unaccompanied minors on the southern border that yielded terrible humanitarian consequences. It also denied jobs to hundreds of thousands of Americans by allowing those same jobs to go to illegal aliens.” If you decided to use statistics, you should look for particularly compelling statistics, such as crime stats, business ownership stats, military service or college graduation stats that support your argument and come from authoritative sources. Finally, a rhetorical story would depict the story of one person affected by this issue (probably a dreamer) and how this decision would impact their lives. I hope that’s helpful! – Amanda

Hi Liu! For an argumentative essay you could use statistics or a powerful rhetorical story to create a compelling atmosphere, or you could use a really poignant quote that encapsulates your argument. Without knowing your topic and what you are arguing (for or against) I can’t be more specific than that though, so feel free to comment with those and I’ll try to give you some more specific advice :D. – Amanda

Hi there,

In that case, I would start with an example of what a non-diverse workplace would look like and why it would not be an ideal set up. For example, if a workplace was so non-diverse that every person had the same idea, nothing would get done. Alternatively, you could simply start with your specific definition of diversity. Diversity can mean many different things depending on who you talk to, and it could be helpful to describe diversity in your own words so that your audience has a clear frame of reference for the rest of your paper.
