I’m assuming your looking for some help with your thesis here because of the content of the post. You’ve got most of it down already. It should be, “Students should not be required to meet specific criteria in order to represent their educational institution in sports competitions because [reason 1], [reason 2], and [reason 3].” then in your paper you’ll explain each reason and discuss a counterargument that people might use to explain why they should and refute that. If you’re not sure what arguments to use, that will come from your research, which you will use to create and support your arguments in your paper. For example, you might say that students should not be required to maintain a specific GPA because not every professor grades the same way and then offer some statistics about how a study found that grades are not indicative of student success due to instructor variation in grading. Obviously this is just one example, but if you start reading papers about sports and academic requirements you should find other examples to support your position. Best of luck to you, happy writing! – Amanda

Hi Adriana! Are you trying to build a thesis around that, or are you having trouble figuring out what you want to say in your paper? If you are looking for a thesis, I would suggest exploring some of the different ways scientists use elements, rather than focusing on the fact that it’s helpful to everyone. If you are thinking about what to say, you could talk about the scientific process and how that grounds all scientific inquiry, creating greater insight and guiding future exploration. Additional details about what you’re looking for could help me provide some stronger guidance! – Amanda

Hi Patricia! The thesis statement of your paper is meant to sum up your arguments, so it’s difficult for me to help without knowing what your arguments are and whether you’re for or against. I’m assuming that you are in support of people becoming foster parents, in which case you’ll want to write something like this, “Adults should consider becoming foster parents because [reason 1], [reason 2], and [reason 3].” Obviously this is pretty generic, but in your case I think it works. If you’re looking for some suggestions on why people should become foster parents, I would suggest talking about the benefits of raising children (there are studies that support this), the improvements in life outcomes for children who live in stable homes rather than orphanages (again, there are studies that support this), or the growing number of children placed in the foster care system who desperately need placement and have nowhere to go. I hope that’s helpful! – Amanda

Hi Maria,

To generate a thesis statement for this prompt, you’ll first want to decide what the argument is, then whether or not the argument is sound, and then what your position is. For example, I’d set this up in a thesis statement by saying something like this: “Anselm’s ontological argument for the existence of God [is]/[is not] sound because [reason 1], [reason 2], and [reason 3].” This type of thesis will give you a good set up for the organization for the rest of your essay. 🙂

PROJECT:Consider Anselm’s ontological argument for the existence of God. Is the argument you’ve selected sound? Explain your position and defend your thesis against at least one potential objection.”

Hi Carina! Your thesis should help your reader understand what you plan to write about in your paper and the purpose of your paper — set the stage, if you will. Without knowing what kind of paper you’re going to write, therefore, it’s hard for me to say exactly what your thesis should be. I’m assuming this is not an argumentative or research paper based on the topic. Maybe you’re trying to evaluate whether or not the boy was actually possessed? If that’s the case, then you might consider writing something like this: “While many in [name]’s community believed he was possessed, after a thorough analysis of his mental health, a review of the crimes, and his condition afterward, it is more likely that he was [insert what you think he was here].” Then you would go on to review those things in your paper, presenting the evidence and analyzing it for the reader. I hope that’s helpful!
