Hey, nice revision. And you’re right, sentence variety is key, too.

As for em dashes—good old Alt + 0151 is the best I’ve got 😉

Thanks for reading.

I read the improved sentence below and felt like having another shot–not a critique, just practicing.

“Regarding tomorrow’s meeting, the focus should be on the different projects that need to be researched.”

VS

“At tomorrow’s meeting, we should focus on projects that need researching.”

I’m not actually a fan of the pared down, spare and bare sentence philosophy–at least not in fiction–and prefer the variety that longer sentences offer when mixed with their short and punchy brothers. And wish there were a nice shortcut for em-dashes on my keyboard.

I agree that ProwritingAid’s sticky sentence finder is garbage if you’re a decent writer. That said, it does make you take a second look at your writing to make sure there’s not a tighter way to say the same thing.

Yes, I’ve used that tool as well and it’s pretty helpful if you already have a good grasp on writing and language. But, nothing beats a human editor! I don’t think we’ll be replacing humans for this type of work any time soon. 🙂

I use ProwritingAid which helps identify sticky sentences but often these sentences are simply ones using the common words. For example it flagged “It’s only going up and down a ladder.” as sticky. I fel Prowriting is not so helpful a tool when it comes to sticky sentences.

Just as you don’t want sticky sentences in writing, you don’t want sticky sentences in your speech. Sticky sentences contain more words than are necessary to express your meaning and make it harder for your audience understand. So you’re right, keep to natural common words for a better speech.
