Great question! Analyzing a music video is actually very similar to analyzing a book or an article. The main difference is the visual aspect of the video. So what I would recommend would be to print out two copies of the lyrics to the song as a first step. With one of the copies, read through the lyrics as if they were a poem and note any important lines, phrases, or stanzas that you see. After, take the second copy of the lyrics, and watch the music video while taking notes on what types of visual scenes are shown when particular lyrics are sung. Often, musicians will make their videos relevant to their lyrics in some way. Another idea would be to look into how critics analyze movies and other pieces of visual art, as the strategies they use can certainly apply to music videos too! I hope that all makes sense 🙂
